Frequently Asked Questions

Place the tolerance band, usually gold or silver, on the right and read the bands from left to right.

A 4-band resistor has 2 significant digits and ±5–10% tolerance, while a 5-band resistor has 3 significant digits and ±1–2% tolerance. The 5-band type is more precise.

A 6-band resistor adds a temperature-coefficient band to the 5-band design. It is used in precision circuits that are sensitive to temperature changes.

In the multiplier position, gold means ×0.1 and silver means ×0.01. In the tolerance position, gold means ±5% and silver means ±10%.

They are standard resistor-value series. E12 provides the 12 base values 10, 12, 15, 18, 22, 27, 33, 39, 47, 56, 68, and 82, while E24 provides 24 more finely spaced base values.

Tips & Best Practices

  • Memorize the color order as Black (0), Brown (1), Red (2), Orange (3), Yellow (4), Green (5), Blue (6), Violet (7), Gray (8), and White (9).
  • Gold-tolerance (±5%) resistors are the most common and provide enough precision for most circuits.
  • Use a 5-band (±1%) or more precise resistor in circuits that require accurate measurements.
  • If the colors on a physical resistor are unclear, verify the actual resistance with a multimeter.
  • SMD resistors use numeric codes instead of color bands and must be read differently from this tool.
